Junior Pathfinders
We start with a brief safety talk, before we take a walk over to a quieter part of the wood. The children are introduced to the principles of navigation by using a map and compass. The first 40 minutes of this session are "classroom style": whilst we gain an understanding of how a compass works, and how to read and understand a map. There will be some straightforard games during this part of the activity to ensure the children have grasped the knowledge and this part of the activity requires the children pay attention! Then we will head off around some of the woodland trails testing out some of what we have learned: before navigating our way back to our start point!
We will cover: -
- Features of the compass
- Cardinal points
- Romer Scales
- Taking a bearing to a fixed point (magnetic)
- Map Bearings
- Grid referencing (6 & 8 figure)
- Map scales & Legends
